Highlights from the conversation
Partnership works as one team. Asked whether a cell-free product like exosomes is easier to make, Syed came back to preparation and partnership: "If there is a wall in between and things are getting thrown over, it won't be successful. If the partnership is embedded and everyone acts as one team toward a common goal, we will be successful." Yoram described the same thing from the other side of the table: "They're coming to the table as partners, sharing ideas, knowledge, and experience, a lot of things that we as a drug development company will need down the road."
Living cells need strong foundations and room to adapt. "There are fundamentals and strong foundations needed so that when we execute something, we do it the right way, with quality in mind and with patients in mind," Syed said. "But we need to be adaptable to what the cells bring us on a given day."
One platform, more than one product. Syed described a shared upstream process, built from the same master cell bank so consistency starts in the same place, and separate downstream steps for each use, down to the analytics and the batch record.
Boring manufacturing is the goal. "You often hear that when manufacturing is boring, things are going well," Syed said. "But boring can't be conflated with commoditization. At the end of the day, this is going into patients."
